Living with a Serious Illness

When someone is diagnosed with a serious or life-limiting illness, their life changes forever. You may notice that people treat you differently – by trying to shield you from unpleasantness, withdrawing from you because they are uncomfortable with illness or “smothering” you with constant attention.

You may experience new emotions or have spiritual questions; you may notice physical changes. Some people grieve the things that the illness has taken away from them including their strength, stamina and sense of well-being. Others feel angry that they are sick and resent family or friends who are healthy. Remember that information and support is available to you.

In this section you will learn how to manage the symptoms and pain associated with a serious illness.
