An advance directive is a legally binding document that gives instructions for your healthcare in the event that you are no longer able to make or communicate those decisions yourself. What happens if you do not have an Advance Directive in Arizona and are unable to speak for yourself
The decision-maker is decided by order of priority:
- A spouse, unless legally separated
- An adult child, if there is more than one, the healthcare provider shall seek consent of the majority reasonably available for consultation
- A parent
- If the patient is unmarried, a domestic partner
- A sibling
- A close friend — someone who has exhibited special care and concern, is familiar with the patient’s healthcare view and describes and is willing and able to be involved in care
- If no one is available, the physician may make decisions in consultation with an institution al ethics committee or, if not available, a second physician.
